Exterior Painters in the Metro East: Edwardsville, Belleville and O'Fallon, Illinois
Category
Rhino Shield of Missouri works on the Illinois side of the river, too. Homeowners in Edwardsville, Belleville, O'Fallon, Collinsville and Glen Carbon get the same ceramic exterior coating system and 25-year transferable warranty we install across St. Louis. The houses change from town to town, though, so the prep plan should change with them.
People in Belleville sometimes assume a company based in Manchester won't cross the Poplar Street Bridge for a house job. We do, and have for years. Our crews have spent about two decades working in Missouri and Southern Illinois, with more than 3,800 installations behind them. What follows is how we think about the Metro East, town by town.
Do St. Louis exterior painters really work in the Metro East?
Some do and some don't, so ask before you schedule an estimate. We serve Southwest Illinois as part of our regular territory, not as an occasional favor.
It's a fair question for any contractor. A company that rarely comes east may pad the bid for drive time or push you to the back of the schedule. Ask how many jobs they've done in your town and whether they can point you to one you can drive past. Our full service area covers roughly 100 miles around St. Louis, and the Metro East sits well inside it.
What do older homes in Belleville and Collinsville need?
Older houses need more prep before anything goes on: sound mortar on brick, repaired or replaced wood, and lead-safe work practices if the home was built before 1978.
Belleville has a lot of older brick and frame housing, especially in the neighborhoods around downtown, and Collinsville's older streets share some of that character. On brick, look at the mortar before you think about color. Loose or crumbling joints need to be repointed before any coating goes over them, and you'll want to talk through how moisture moves through that particular wall. On older wood siding, expect some board replacement and a lot of scraping.
Lead is the part nobody likes discussing. Any contractor disturbing paint on a pre-1978 home should follow the EPA's lead-safe Renovation, Repair and Painting rules. Ask for the certification, and ask how they'll contain dust and chips around your yard.
What about Edwardsville and Glen Carbon?
You'll find a real mix there. Older homes near the historic core, plenty of wood and cedar, and newer subdivisions with fiber cement or engineered wood siding. Each one needs a different prep plan.
We wrote up one local project on its own: a cedar home in Edwardsville that shows the kind of wood exterior we mean. Wood siding needs cleaning, repairs and every joint sealed before primer and topcoat go on. Cedar moves with the seasons, so a stiff paint film tends to crack and peel. A flexible, elastomeric coating handles that movement better.
Glen Carbon's newer neighborhoods look a lot more like St. Charles County. Fiber cement and LP SmartSide, builder-grade paint, and open lots where the west walls bake all afternoon. If your siding is engineered wood, the cut ends and bottom edges need to be sealed so they don't swell.
What do newer homes in O'Fallon, Illinois need?
Mostly protection from sun and weather on siding that came with a thin factory or builder finish. HOA color approval is often part of the process too.
O'Fallon and nearby Shiloh have grown fast, and a lot of those houses were finished on a tight construction schedule. Expect to see chalking on sunny walls, open caulk at butt joints and trim, and fading on darker colors. If there's a chance you'll sell in the next several years, a transferable warranty is worth weighing. It goes with the house, and buyers notice it.
How does Metro East weather affect exterior paint?
About the same way it does in St. Louis. Humid summers feed mildew, freeze-thaw cycles open cracks, spring hail beats on siding, and summer UV breaks down thin paint.
That's why a 1 to 2 mil paint film so often needs redoing every 5 to 7 years. Rhino Shield goes on at 8 to 10 mils. The ceramic microspheres reflect UV, and the finish resists mildew and fading. It's not a quick spray job either. Each house gets cleaned, repaired, caulked and sealed, primed, and then multiple coats of ceramic topcoat.
Here's how one homeowner summed up working with us:
"Rhino Shield was amazing to work with. They were timely, professional, and my house looks great! Thank you, Darrin and team for all your help!"
— Cecelia E.
Timely matters more than people think. If you live on the far side of a bridge from a contractor's shop, ask how they schedule around the drive before you sign.
What should Illinois homeowners check before hiring?
The same things you'd check anywhere, plus one: confirm the contractor meets any requirements your own city or village sets. Those rules vary by municipality.
- A current certificate of insurance showing general liability and workers' comp
- EPA lead-safe certification for pre-1978 homes
- A written scope naming prep steps, products, coat count and repairs
- Warranty terms in writing, including whether they transfer
- Local references you can actually go look at
Costs work the same on both sides of the river. Rhino Shield runs about 2 to 2.5 times a traditional paint job up front and is built to last 25 years or more, so the comparison that matters is cost per year. If you're shopping exterior painters in the Metro East, we'd like to be on your list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Rhino Shield of Missouri work in Illinois?
Yes. We serve Southwest Illinois, including Edwardsville, Belleville, O'Fallon, Collinsville and Glen Carbon. The coating system and the 25-year transferable warranty are the same as on our Missouri jobs.
Can you coat an older brick home in Belleville?
Often, yes, but the brick has to be ready. Loose mortar should be repointed first, and you should talk through how moisture moves through that wall before choosing any coating. We'll look at the brick on site and tell you honestly whether it's a good candidate.
Is a coating a good choice for cedar siding in Edwardsville?
It can be. Cedar expands and contracts with humidity, and a flexible elastomeric coating handles that movement better than a stiff paint film. The wood still needs cleaning, repairs and sealed joints first.
How long does an exterior coating last compared to paint in Illinois?
Traditional exterior paint usually lasts about 5 to 7 years in this climate. Rhino Shield is built to last 25 years or more and carries a 25-year transferable warranty. The weather is the same on both sides of the river, so the numbers are too.
